Word Problems
Many students are having trouble with word problems. When this happens at home, please remind your student about the 4 step problem solving method.
1. Write down what you know - what details are given to you? What is the problem you are trying to solve?
2. Make a plan to solve - how are you going to do it?
3. Solve the problem
4. Check your work!
This is exactly what I tell them in class. If a student asks me for help, I will not help them until they have completed the first step. Usually, after they do that, they don't need any additional help. I hope this helpful!

We had a new automated system added to school master yesterday to call the absent students. Instead of calling the absent students it called the kids in attendance. So if you got a call on Wednesday 8/31 from the school just disregard it.

Rounding Numbers
Today we rounded numbers in math class. Here is what I gave the students as a rule:
Find the number you are rounding and underline it.
Example 3,785; Thousands
Underline the 3 because that is in the thousands spot.
Look to the right of that number (circle it) and this number will help you decide if you will round up or round down.
Circle the the 7 because it is right next to the 3.
Is that number higher than 5? If yes then round up by adding 1 to the number you are rounding.
7 is larger than 5 so we will round up. We will add 1 to the 3 and make it a four.
After we round the number, we turn the rest of the numbers into zeros.
So 3,785 rounds to 4,000.
If the number next to the number you are rounding is less than 5 then you round down.
Example: 3,485; Thousands
The number next to the 3 is a 4. 4 is less than 5 so we are going to round down. Here we are keeping the rounded number the same as it was and add zeros.
3,485 rounds to 3,000.

Snack Time
Today I sent home our vocab list with definitions and also the four steps for solving a word problem. Students need to try the math homework assigned for today. If they need extra help, have them circle the ones they need help with and I will go over it tomorrow in class.
Each day we take a little break so students can have a little snack. I was wondering if anyone could donate some snacks for students who forget their snack.
Also, Wednesday is early release. Our new release time is 1:45.

Third Day of School (Already?)
Today we started talking about risks and consequences. This is our first unit in the reading book. We talked about what a risk is and what a consequence is. We also started talking about place value in math.
Students have one page in their math book. It will talk about standard form, word form, and expanded form.
Say you have the number 128,300
Standard form: This is how you normally write the digits (128,300)
Word form: The numbers turned into words (One hundred twenty eight thousand three hundred)
Expanded form: Shows the value of each digit (100,000+20,000+8,000+300)
If students need to look back at the book, I have link to the math book on my blog. You can copy the book code and see the whole book online.

First day of school!
Hello everyone!
We had a great first day of school. I passed out our boomerang folders, agendas, and reading logs. Our boomerang folders are homework folders that go home every night and need to come back to school the next day. Students bring home their agendas and are expected to show them to you every night. After you make sure students finish their homework, please sign off on their agendas. Agendas this year cost $5.
Tonight's homework:
Read for 20 minutes and fill out your reading logs!
Thank you so much! This is going to be a great year!

Welcome to Fourth Grade!
August 11, 2011
Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Welcome back to school! I would like to introduce myself because I am new to the Carden family. My name is Daniela Behm and I am so excited to work with you and your student. I have had a lot of experience with fourth grade and I am so grateful that I can join this fourth grade team. For some of you this is a welcome back, for others, we are glad to have you as part of our family. We are looking forward to building lasting relationships with all of you. Please take a moment to fill out the student information card attached to this letter; there is also a weekly schedule showing our special periods
Carden is using a student agenda again this year. This is a vital tool the teachers will use to keep in contact with you on a daily basis. Please do look at & sign your child’s agenda each day. Carden has a “Communication Tuesday” policy. Each Tuesday your student will receive a large envelope with information primarily from the front office. Please empty this on Tuesday, read the information, sign & date the envelope and send it back to school with your student on Wednesday.
There are a couple of classroom policies I want to make you aware of. Any homework assigned is due the next day unless otherwise stated. If your child is absent, it is his/her responsibility to find out what is due and will have 2 days (per absent day) to make up the work. Students also need to be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes at home each day.
I have a classroom website/blog (http://missbehm.blogspot.com/) that will help you keep up to date with all pertinent classroom information. Each day the website will be updated with the daily agenda information; and each week the spelling and vocabulary words will be listed as well. I post reminders about classroom events, have links to a variety of websites (i.e. the math book online, CLI our online grader, educational games, etc.) I also will post photos/videos of the students actively learning. Please note on the student information card if you DO NOT want your child’s photo on our website.
There is also a no toy policy; please make sure your child understands that toys are for home, not for school. There are no electronics or cell phones in the on position while on campus.
This will be a great year. We have a great fourth grade teaching team, and a wonderful support staff. Again, if you believe anything needs our attention, please let me know. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you.
Thank you,
Daniela Behm
